Fake It Till You Earn It

In the last installment we talked about the 5 reasons why we fake it. Today we are going to dive into the 4 Steps To Earning It. It is important to note that these four steps help differentiate between activity and productivity. Anyone can run one hundred miles per hour in any given direction, but most people will be frustrated after a long time running that they are no closer to their goals. As Dave Ramsey says, if you don’t plan you’ll spend your time climbing the ladder just to realize when you get to the top that you’re on the wrong ladder. Or another of my favorites by Ben Franklin is “If you fail to plan then you plan to fail.

So without further ado, let’s dive in!

fake it till you earn it1. Start Learning

The only way to fix ignorance is by learning. You need to identify the 5 reasons you are faking it (see previous article here) and start identifying what you need to learn so you can stop faking. You will never get ahead if you keep doing the same wrong things over and over. So take the first step and start learning. Best place to start is to…

2. Prioritize

Peter Voogd wrote a book called 6 Months to 6 Figures. In it he talks about the problem with information overload and warns that overloading yourself with too much information on too many topics will leave you burnt out and ineffective. Instead focus on information mastery. Pick a single topic and dive deep and only when that topic is mastered then move on to another.  This strategy will help you stop faking single topics at a time and will keep you from having to go back and study the same content over and over again.

How many times have you read something and a few weeks later you forgot what you read? This helps to tackle that problem and produces long term retention. It also helps you to stay focused over time.

3. Hustle

When you do nothing, nothing happens. Obviously. But now that you have taken the first step and prioritized what you are going to learn it’s time to get to it. The one person who comes to mind whenever I think about hustle is Gary Vaynerchuk.

Below is a quick video where Gary talks about “The Most Important Word Ever”. (FYI - There is some adult language in this video.)

You are now the one who determines where you go and how fast you get there. Hustle is what determines everything from here on. If you are happy moseying along at a snail pace then it will take you a long time to master the knowledge you’re seeking and you’ll be faking it for a long time too. If you are ready to run at that breakneck hundred mile per hour speed you can run confidently knowing which direction you are going.  You decide, but at the end of the day your distance and speed is 100% determined by your hustle.

4. Repeat

Now you have the idea. Just keep repeating the process for each area you’re faking. Once you master one area, go on to the next. Keep going. When you find you are no longer faking it, then you’ve reached the end. My guess is at this point you’ll be about 110 years old...because the truth is, you never stop learning. You’ll always find yourself in a predicament that you have to fake something. This is because, if you haven’t already guessed, it’s impossible to know everything. The good news is, the more you know, the better you can fake it and the more prepared you will be for any situation you find yourself in.

By focusing on learning you will put yourself in the best place possible. You can learn through lessons, teachers, mentors, experiences… the list goes on. The important thing is to keep an open mind and keep learning. That is how you fake it till you earn it!

There is one final piece of this puzzle that we will discuss in the final installment, but for now go out there and start prioritizing, learning, and hustling. Take what you fake the most and start there. Learn everything you can about that topic, master it, then move on to the next one. Before long you’ll notice that the only time you are faking it is when you get thrown under the bus!
